The
one thing my folks and I did right, was to ride her almost
daily. I did the riding, but my parents went along with me
and watched me ride. This was a good idea, I think, on
account of the safety issues. I was only ten years old and
after all, Rocket wasn't another Ginger!
So, we didn't know what we were doing, but
the mare did get some miles put on her.
I enrolled in the 4-H Horse Project. My
mother was a Community Leader of a 4-H club and I had been
going to 4-H meetings for as long as I could remember.
Mother had first been recruited to help with the 4-H club
because of her sewing expertise and over the years, she
taught lots of kids how to sew.
We went to only one horse project meeting
that year, but I wanted to show Rocket at the fair anyhow.
Dad was reluctant, but he agreed to take us.
Our method of transporting Rocket was to
haul her in a stock rack on the back of Dad's pickup truck.
Amazing as it is to think of now, that was not an uncommon
method of hauling horses back then! Again, I have to reflect
on how Rocket was more cooperative than we gave her credit
for at the time!
